Why do fetuses have excessive cerebrospinal fluid

Pregnancy is crucial for most women. After pregnancy, women need to go to the hospital regularly for prenatal check ups to observe whether the fetus in their abdomen is developing normally, in order to detect any problems with the fetus in a timely manner and receive treatment. So, why does the fetus have excessive cerebrospinal fluid?

Why do fetuses have excessive cerebrospinal fluid1

Women may notice excessive cerebrospinal fluid in their fetuses during regular prenatal check ups, which can be caused by various factors. Firstly, it may be due to genetics or maternal fetal blood type incompatibility. Secondly, it may also be influenced by the surrounding environment, food, medication, and viral infections.

During the ten month period of fetal development, due to the slow development of the brain's aqueduct system, while the fetal brain develops rapidly, the circulatory capacity of the aqueduct system cannot sustain the amount of cerebrospinal fluid produced. Therefore, during prenatal checkups, there may be an excess of cerebrospinal fluid in the fetus. However, as the aqueduct system gradually develops and improves, the situation of excessive cerebrospinal fluid will also gradually disappear.

Therefore, if excessive cerebrospinal fluid is found during prenatal examination, do not be nervous and maintain a good mood. After one month, a follow-up examination will be conducted to observe the absorption of cerebrospinal fluid. If it decreases compared to before, it indicates that there is no problem. If there is still no significant decrease or even an increase in cerebrospinal fluid volume after one month, then amniocentesis examination is needed.
