What's wrong with pus in breast milk

Most mothers breastfeed their babies after giving birth because breast milk helps them grow up healthy. However, recently, some mothers have found pus in their milk, which has made them very worried. They want to know what's going on with pus in their milk? So, let me explain in detail below.

What's wrong with pus in breast milk1

If a mother finds pus in her breast milk, she should consider that it may be caused by mastitis infection. Mastitis refers to acute suppurative infection of the breast, and the occurrence of mastitis is mainly caused by bacteria (such as Staphylococcus aureus) invading the breast tissue through nipple cracks or nipple openings. It often occurs within 1 to 2 months postpartum.

When a mother suffers from mastitis, she will first show symptoms such as breast redness, swelling, pain, high local skin temperature, obvious tenderness, and indistinct hard lumps in clinical practice. As the inflammation continues to develop, an abscess will form. When the abscess matures, it will rupture on its own and be discharged along with breast milk. When a mother discovers the above symptoms, she should seek medical treatment in a timely manner.

If the abscess flows out smoothly, only external medication is needed for local swelling and pain relief treatment. If the abscess does not flow out smoothly, surgery should be performed to cut open and discharge the pus, and antibiotics should be given for treatment. During the treatment period, the mother should stop breastfeeding. If breast swelling and pain are obvious, local hot compress can be given to relieve the pain.
