It is estimated that it usually refers to colored imprints on the surface or subcutaneous area of the newborn's skin, and the cause of these imprints is currently unclear. The incidence of newborn birthmarks is very common, about 10%. Most birthmarks only affect appearance and do not require special treatment. So, what kind of birthmark can disappear on its own?
There are two main types of birthmarks: pigmented birthmarks and vascular birthmarks
1. Pigmented birthmark
(1) Black
The most common type of pigmented mole is a black mark that does not disappear on its own. If the diameter is less than 4-6 millimeters, there is no need to worry too much. If it is the size of a palm or larger area, close observation and targeted treatment should be carried out according to medical advice.
(2) Blue color
Mongolian spots or Ota nevi can be treated with laser, and after three to five treatments, they can be basically improved.
(3) White
Vitiligo or depigmented nevi
By rubbing the local skin several times, it can be distinguished that the skin damage turning red is vitiligo, otherwise it is an depigmented mole. Wood lamp examination is more convenient.
2. Vascular birthmark (red hemangioma)
(1) Fresh red spot nevus: appears at birth or within a few days after birth. The color is lighter, the edges are irregular, and pressing can fade the color. Most red spots can disappear, so parents can pay attention to observation first. If the mole has not disappeared after the baby is 3 years old, pulsed laser removal should be performed.
(2) Strawberry shaped hemangioma: appears within a few weeks of birth, gradually enlarges over several months, and reaches its maximum size around the age of one. About 75% -95% of affected children can completely or partially regress on their own by the age of 5-7. If they have not regressed by primary school, pulsed laser removal can be performed.
