Reasons for varicose veins in the lower limbs

Varicose veins in the lower limbs are most common in some workers who have been standing for a long time, and it is a relatively common disease. Do you know the cause of varicose veins in the lower limbs?

Reasons for varicose veins in the lower limbs1

  1. Age and gender

Due to the fact that limb venous pressure only reaches its maximum pressure when the body length reaches its maximum, the body is not tall before puberty, so the venous caliber is small, which can prevent venous dilation. Therefore, although severe varicose veins may occur before the age of 30, most of them gradually lose their tension in the venous wall and valves with age, and symptoms worsen, forcing patients to seek medical attention.

Varicose veins are more common in women and may be induced or exacerbated by pregnancy. However, in women without pregnancy, the incidence rate is also higher than that of men (male: female=1:3). The reason may be that women's pelvis is wider, the vascular structure is excessively curved, and the veins in the pelvis can increase congestion during menstruation, pregnancy and menopause. Another reason why varicose veins are prone to occur during pregnancy is due to the decreased tension of superficial veins in the limbs, which makes them easier to dilate. This condition can be restored after childbirth.

  2. Persistent increase in intravenous pressure

Venous blood itself exerts a certain pressure on the valve due to gravity, which normally does not cause damage to it. However, when the pressure inside the vein continues to rise, the valve will bear excessive pressure, gradually relaxing, prolapsed, and causing incomplete closure. This is more common in long-term standing work, heavy physical labor, pregnancy, chronic cough, long-term constipation, etc.

  3. Weak venous wall and valve defects

The venous wall is relatively weak and can expand under venous pressure. The expansion at the valve sinus leads to the original venous valve not being tightly closed, resulting in relative valve dysfunction and blood reflux. Valve dysplasia or deficiency cannot effectively prevent backflow, leading to disease.

There are three main causes of varicose veins in the lower limbs. Only by understanding their causes can we do a good job in prevention.
