Precautions for sperm vitality testing1

Sperm vitality testing requires men to collect their own semen for examination. Routine tests include semen volume, color, odor, pH, liquefaction time, viscosity, sperm density, sperm morphology, motility, survival rate, and white blood cells. The correct method of semen collection is beneficial for improving the accuracy of examination results.

Before semen collection, it is necessary to abstain from sexual activity for 3 to 5 days to ensure accurate sperm count. Abstinence for too long or too short can affect the test results.

Collect all semen in a clean container through masturbation or sexual intercourse, and store it in an environment close to body temperature. Send it to the laboratory for examination as soon as possible, no later than 1 hour. It is recommended to place the container close to the body or hold it tightly with both hands during the delivery of sperm, so as to keep the sperm in the container as close to body temperature as possible.

It should be noted that the container used to hold sperm cannot be a condom, as condoms used in daily life contain spermicidal substances that can cause sperm death, thereby affecting the final test results.

In the inspection report, sperm motility can be divided into four levels: level A represents rapid linear forward movement, level B represents slow forward movement, level C represents stationary oscillation, and level D represents inactivity. The vitality of normal sperm should be no less than 25% for grade A or no less than 50% for grade A+B. If it is lower than normal, it belongs to low sperm vitality.
