How to do pelvic measurement

Many people know that the pelvis refers to the soft birth canal formed between the uterus, cervix, vagina, and external genitalia of the human body, and the pelvis of a pregnant woman plays a crucial role in the process of childbirth. The speed and smoothness of childbirth are closely related to the size and shape of the pregnant woman's pelvis. Many people know that a narrow or deformed pelvis can cause difficult labor.

Therefore, pregnant women should undergo routine pelvic measurements and examinations during their first prenatal examination. The following are the methods for pelvic measurement.

In clinical practice, pelvic external measurements are usually performed on pregnant women, with the following indicators.

  1. The iliac spine diameter refers to the distance between the outer edges of the anterior superior iliac spines on both sides of the examination bed when a pregnant woman lies supine with her legs extended. The normal value is 23-26cm.

  2. The iliac crest diameter refers to the widest distance between the outer edges of the iliac crest on both sides when a pregnant woman lies supine on the examination bed with her legs extended. The normal value is 23-26cm.

  3. Sacral outer diameter refers to the left lateral position of the pregnant woman, with the right leg extended and the left leg flexed; The normal distance measured from the midpoint of the pubic symphysis to the depression below the spinous process of the fifth lumbar vertebra is 18-20cm.

  4. The transverse diameter of the exit is as follows: lying supine, legs bent, hands tightly embracing knees, measuring the distance between the inner edges of the two ischial nodules. The normal value is 8.5-9.5cm.

  5. The sagittal diameter after exit refers to the knee chest or left lateral position of the pregnant woman; The examiner extends their right index finger into the anus and works with their thumb to locate and mark the sacrococcygeal joint with their fingertips facing towards the sacrum; Measure the distance between the marked point and the midpoint of the exit diameter. The normal value is 8-9 cm.

  6. The angle of the pubic arch is supine, with legs bent and hands tightly embracing both knees; Align the tips of the left and right thumbs diagonally, place them on the lower edge of the pubic symphysis, and place the left and right thumbs flat on the descending branch of the pubic bone. Measure the angle between the two thumbs and record it. The normal value is 90 °.

Therefore, especially for expectant mothers who are pregnant for the first time, pelvic measurement is necessary. Its measurement data can be used as an important indicator to determine the mode of delivery. Pregnant mothers should go to the hospital for relevant pelvic measurements at the appropriate time, understand their pelvic size, and choose the most suitable mode of delivery to give birth to their baby under the professional advice of a doctor.
