How to determine whether amenorrhea or menopause1

Generally, women enter the perimenopausal stage at the age of 45, and their menstrual cycle and menstrual blood flow begin to become unstable. Women in this age group who have not menstruated for more than a year are considered to have entered the menopausal stage. If women under the age of 45 do not experience menstruation, there may be amenorrhea factors, and they need to go to the hospital for detailed examination to determine the reason for not experiencing menstruation.

If women after 45 experience discomfort symptoms such as hot flashes, dry skin, sweating, insomnia, impatience, anxiety, vaginal dryness, etc., their ovarian function gradually declines. If they have not menstruated for more than a year and are no longer able to conceive, it is called menopause. This is a normal physiological phenomenon and also the difference from pathological amenorrhea.

Amenorrhea refers to a condition in which a normal woman of childbearing age does not experience menstruation for more than six months before entering perimenopause, known as amenorrhea. Often caused by gynecological diseases such as ovarian dysfunction, luteal insufficiency, polycystic ovary syndrome, etc., menstrual periods cannot come normally, which is the fundamental difference between amenorrhea and menopause.
