The follicles in the female ovaries begin to develop during menstruation, and from the initial primordial follicles to mature follicles, they need to go through multiple stages. According to the menstrual cycle, there are early follicular phase, follicular phase, ovulation phase, and luteal phase. During the ovulation phase of these multiple processes, the maximum size of female follicles can be around 20mm. Through ultrasound monitoring, the size of follicles and ovulation status can be understood. If follicles larger than 18mm are found during the monitoring process, they are basically mature follicles.

For women with a regular menstrual cycle, the follicles can develop to maturity in about 15 days from the first day of menstruation, followed by ovulation, which is also known as the ovulation period. If women with fertility needs arrange sexual intercourse at this stage, it can greatly increase the pregnancy rate.

After ovulation occurs, the female ovaries will form the corpus luteum, which then returns to the early follicular phase. This is a cyclical process. According to their physiological cycle, women with fertility needs or ovarian dysfunction can undergo ultrasound monitoring of follicular development, which can more accurately detect the development and maturity of follicles.
