Does progesterone cause an increase in body temperature

In general, a woman's body temperature changes with the menstrual cycle. Before menstruation, women's body temperature is maintained at around 36 degrees Celsius under the action of estrogen, and then the temperature gradually decreases, reaching its lowest point during ovulation. After ovulation or conception, body temperature will gradually increase. So, does progesterone raise body temperature?

Does progesterone cause an increase in body temperature1

After ovulation, women form the corpus luteum, which produces progesterone. Progesterone stimulates the thermoregulatory center, causing an increase in basal body temperature ranging from 0.3 to 0.5 ℃. If there is no pregnancy, the corpus luteum will atrophy, menstruation will come, and body temperature will drop back to normal. If pregnant, the body temperature will continue to rise, that is, the body temperature can increase by 0.3~0.5 degrees. If it exceeds 14 days, it can be judged that pregnancy is possible.

The reason why a woman's body temperature rises after pregnancy is because the level of chorionic gonadotropin in the pregnant woman's body increases, which leads to an increase in the level of progesterone in the body. The increase in progesterone levels leads to an increase in basal body temperature, which is more pronounced in early pregnancy and is also the main cause of early pregnancy temperature elevation. This is a normal physiological phenomenon.

An increase in basal body temperature in early pregnancy is a normal phenomenon for women. If the basal body temperature rises by more than 0.6 degrees, it should be noted that it may be caused by other diseases, such as colds. For women in the early stages of pregnancy, if their cold condition is not severe, they can drink more water or take a hot bath, and receive treatment through physical therapy or acupoint massage. If the situation is serious, pregnant mothers should not use cold medicine casually. It is best to seek medical treatment at a hospital and follow the doctor's instructions for treatment.
