Complications of intrauterine devices

Many women use certain methods to prevent pregnancy after giving birth or deciding not to have another child, among which placing an intrauterine device is one of the methods. The contraceptive effect of this method is very good, but many problems may also occur after placement. Here are the complications of intrauterine devices.

Complications of intrauterine devices1

  1. Infection

In most cases, there is no problem with placing an intrauterine device (IUD), but if a woman does not go to a regular hospital for operation, the device may become contaminated or have some inflammation, which may lead to intrauterine infection and gynecological inflammation, such as pelvic inflammatory disease and endometritis. At this point, it is necessary to remove the contraceptive device and take antibiotics for treatment.

  2. Uterine perforation

The main placement location of contraceptive devices is in the uterus. If the operator is not proficient enough or if the woman has uterine fibroids, excessive uterine tilt, or a weak uterus, it may cause the contraceptive device to penetrate the uterus and cause uterine perforation. And the larger the perforation, the more intense the pain women feel. Therefore, it is advisable to choose a reputable institution and first determine whether the health condition of the uterus is suitable for placement.

  3. Ectopic contraceptive device

Ectopic intrauterine device (IUD) mainly refers to the device deviating from its intended position, running outside the uterus or penetrating the uterine wall into the pelvic cavity. It is mainly caused by inaccurate placement or prolonged use, and needs to be removed and adjusted in a timely manner.
