Mediterranean anemia is an autosomal recessive genetic disease. If the couple is carriers of the Mediterranean anemia gene, pregnant women should pay more attention to prenatal examinations to understand whether the fetal development is healthy. So, can fetal thalassemia be detected before delivery?
1. Mediterranean anemia is also known as hypoplastic anemia. In areas with high incidence of this disease and pregnant women suspected of having thalassemia, or if both partners are carriers of the thalassemia gene, women with such conditions should strengthen prenatal checkups after pregnancy and undergo necessary prenatal diagnosis to accurately diagnose whether the fetus will have thalassemia.
2. During pregnancy, the diagnostic method for whether the fetus will inherit thalassemia is mainly to extract amniotic fluid for chorionic villus biopsy, which can be used for early diagnosis of whether the fetus is at risk of thalassemia, and further genetic testing of fetal thalassemia is needed to make accurate prenatal diagnosis.
3. When pregnant women undergo prenatal check ups and accurately diagnose severe thalassemia in their fetuses, it is recommended to follow medical advice and implement targeted treatment plans to avoid the burden on families and society caused by the birth of children with severe illnesses. But if the fetus belongs to mild thalassemia, it can live a normal life after birth, so the diagnosis of mild thalassemia fetus can continue pregnancy until delivery.
