The main purpose of Down syndrome screening is to detect Down syndrome. This test is mainly conducted by examining the serum of pregnant women, combined with their pregnancy status, weight, and expected delivery date, in order to calculate the coefficient of congenital defects in the fetus. So, are twins eligible for Down syndrome screening?
Twins undergoing Down syndrome screening mainly refers to twins undergoing Down syndrome screening. In fact, it is not recommended for twins to undergo Down syndrome screening because the results are inaccurate and therefore have no reference value. Twins who want to check the coefficient of congenital defects in their fetuses should preferably undergo amniocentesis, as this examination is more accurate.
If twins want to check for fetal abnormalities, they can undergo amniocentesis or a non-invasive DNA test to screen for their health. Mothers who are pregnant with a single child can undergo Down syndrome screening, but twins do not need to undergo it.
Many examination indicators and data for twins are different from those for singleton babies, so a series of data during Down syndrome screening are not suitable for twins and are not easy to use for twin examinations. Therefore, doctors do not recommend Down syndrome screening for twins. However, non-invasive DNA testing can be performed between 12 and 24 weeks of pregnancy for twins.
